AREAS AFFECTED: Greater Lake Tahoe Area; Greater Lake Tahoe Area
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Heavy snow. Snow accumulations between 1 to 2 feet above 6500 feet with snow accumulations between 6 to 14 inches below 6500 feet. Locally higher snowfall amounts up to 3 to 3.5 feet possible at the highest elevations. Ridge winds gusting as high as 100 mph. Lake Tahoe winds gusting up to 40 mph with waves of 2 to 3 feet. * WHERE...Greater Lake Tahoe Area. * WHEN...Until 11 PM PDT Tuesday. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning and evening commutes. Blowing snow could cause reduced visibilities. Very strong winds could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible especially Monday morning through Monday evening at the crest level. This Winter Storm Warning now takes the place of the previously issued Winter Weather Advisory for Tuesday.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped
hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.
When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area
of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical
gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific
to any geographic area.
Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole,
skypunch, and cloud hole.

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless,
smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud,
because it is thicker.
Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat
of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate
before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.
